Hope for the Future - is an outdoor soup kitchen for homeless and impoverished individuals living in the lower east side of New York City. This mission is done on a twice a week basis and is supervised by Pastor Diane Dunne. The Mission Committee sponsors an all-day Saturday outing two or three times a year to reach out to these physically and spiritually needy individuals. The church, first via the Youth Group and now through the Mission Committee, has been providing this service for the past 21 years. The next all-day event will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016.
Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang – in contrast to Hope for the Future, this is a relatively new mission for Community Presbyterian Church. Beginning in January 2015 we meet on the third Friday of the month to make 500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need. This project is coordinated through St. Anne’s church in Brentwood, where the sandwiches are brought and then distributed. Each sandwich we prepare includes a Bible verse, hoping to inspire each individual receiving it.
The Shepherd’s Table – on most Mondays at 6:00 p.m. a meal is provided in the church’s social hall. The meal is prepared by a group of volunteers from the community who are very committed to this cause. The Mission Committee has recently taken on the responsibility to oversee and support this program which has existed for most of the past twenty years. All are welcome to experience the food and fellowship at the Shepherd’s Table.
John Chapter 21 relates the story of Jesus asking Peter to “Feed my Sheep”, again to “Feed my Sheep” then to “Tend to my sheep.” We, in the Mission Committee look for ways to both “feed those in need” and to “tend to those in need.” While it is easy to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or to hand out a food staple or a hot meal to the homeless with Hope for the Future, to what degree is the call to “tend to” those in need different?
The Mission Committee meets the second Tuesday of the month to plan mission activities and to find ways to serve, whether feeding or tending to those in need. These are the current mission projects:
